Abruzzo nature reserve Monte Velino - Magliano dei Marsi, Massa d'Albe

Situated in the municipalities of Magliano dei Marsi and Massa d'Albe, the reserve of Monte Velino was founded in 1987 and is 3550 hectares large.

Altitude here goes from 987 to 2486 meters above sea-level.

The main body of the reserve is represented by the mountain chain of Sevice, Velino, Cafornia and Magnola. Between the Magnola and the other three we find the Majelama valley; another one, the Teve valley, separates the group from the Duchessa mountains, whose highest peak are maximum 2200 meters and whose major peaks are the Murolungo and the Costone mountains, where the Duchessa lake is (10 hectares large), bordering to the north with the Morrone mountain.

To the north-east we find the peaks of Costone, Vena Stellante, Colle dell'Orso, Capo di Pezza and Costone della Cerasa-Magnola.

It is peculiar that in this area there are no rivers or any permanent water except the Duchessa lake, due to the geological nature of the territory.
