Abruzzo nature reserve Oasi WWF Abetina di Selva Grande in Castiglione Messer Marino

The reserve was founded in 1996 and the WWF takes care of it from 1997.

Its extension is around 900 hectares. Together with the Oasi of Abetina di Rosello it offers the chance of a great day out for excursions.

A nice mix of woods of white fir-trees, beeches, Lobelius maples, yews, lime-trees, ash-trees, mountain-helms, white hornbeams, turkey oaks, nut-trees and sorbs.

The underwood is extremely rich, with a lot of beutiful plants like the crocus, the squill, the Salomon's seal, the columbine and a variety of orchids.

The fauna is impressive: among the birds of prey we count the woodpecker (including the rare black woodpecker), the astore, the sparrow-hawk, the honey buzzard and the owl.

Smaller birds present in the reserve are the chaffinch, the bullfinch, the kinglet, the firecrest and the titmouse.

Among the mammals living here we find the wolf, the wildcat, the marten and the roe-deer.

The spectacled salamander and the rare river crawfish are also here.
