Abruzzo nature reserve Oasi WWF Abetina di Rosello

The nature reserve of Abetina di Rosello is situated along the middle part of the Sangro river at the border between Abruzzo and Molise.

Here you can find some of the last specimens of white fir-tree. The altitude is from 850 and 1179 meters above sea-level.

The Mount Castellano and the Turcano torrent are part of the reserve, together with a large extension of woods, pastures and rocky environment. The extension of the reserve is 10 hectares. Together with the white fir-trees, presenting some magnificent specimens, the other trees in the reserve are the beech, the Lobelius maple, the yew, the lime, the ash-tree and the mountain elm. The underwood is particularly rich in the area.

The fauna is as rich as the flora: the wood is full of woodpeckers (the black woodpecker), but also of birds of prey like the astore, the sparrow-hawk, honey buzzards, short-toed eagles and many singing birds. River crawfish is also here together with and the spectacled salamander. Among mammals we find the wildcat, the marten, the roe-deer and the wolf.

The reserve is excellent for nature excursions. There is a museum dedicated to the white fir-tree (Museo dell’Abete bianco).

Open all year to visitors, on sundays the opening hours are from 10 am until 15 pm.
